Volta ao Algarve 2026: Route, Stages, Dates and Key Highlights
Volta ao Algarve 2026 returns with a renewed route, world class riders and five days of racing across one of Europe’s most scenic regions.
The Volta ao Algarve 2026 returns between 18 and 22 February with a renewed route, new tactical elements and one of the strongest pelotons of the early cycling season. As part of the international ProSeries calendar, the race continues to establish itself as one of the most important stage races in Europe.
Over five stages and 697 kilometres, the Volta ao Algarve crosses the Algarve coast, inland hills and mountain roads, combining sprint stages, decisive mountain finishes and a key individual time trial.
Volta ao Algarve 2026 Route: More Action from Day One
One of the main highlights of the Volta ao Algarve 2026 route is the debut start in Vila Real de Santo António. The opening stage to Tavira keeps a flat profile suited to sprinters, while introducing new tactical elements that may influence the general classification from the very first day.
This approach creates immediate unpredictability and ensures the race remains open and competitive from start to finish.
Fóia Summit, Vilamoura Time Trial and Double Malhão
Stage two heads from Portimão to the Alto da Fóia in the Monchique mountains, featuring a longer and more selective climb that is expected to clearly define the main contenders for the overall classification.
Stage three is dedicated to the individual time trial in Vilamoura. The 19.5 km urban course starts with a more technical section near the Marina before opening into a fast layout favouring time trial specialists. This stage is one of the key moments of the Volta ao Algarve cycling race.
On Saturday, stage four connects Albufeira to Lagos, offering another opportunity for the sprinters, while still including tactical points that may create tension within the peloton.
The race is decided on Sunday with the iconic Faro to Alto do Malhão stage. The double ascent of Malhão within a demanding final circuit is traditionally decisive for the overall victory.
João Almeida, Ayuso and a World Class Peloton
The Volta ao Algarve 2026 will feature 12 WorldTour teams, three ProTeams and all Portuguese continental teams. The presence of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, leader of the UCI ranking in 2025, guarantees an exceptionally high competitive level.
João Almeida is one of the main favourites after finishing second in 2025 and delivering an outstanding season. The reunion with Juan Ayuso is one of the most anticipated duels of the race.
A Global Event Promoting the Algarve
Beyond the sporting spectacle, the Volta ao Algarve 2026 plays a crucial role in promoting the Algarve internationally and reinforcing its position as a destination capable of hosting major international sporting events.
