Youth Sailing World Championship returns to Vilamoura in 2026
Vilamoura strengthens its international sailing reputation as it prepares to host the Youth Sailing World Championship once again in 2026.
Vilamoura has been confirmed as the host city for the 2026 Youth Sailing World Championship, following the outstanding success of the 2025 edition. The event reinforces the Algarve’s position as a leading destination for international sailing competitions.
In 2025, the championship welcomed 424 young sailors from 67 countries, competing across several classes including 29er, ILCA 6, Nacra 15, 420, iQFOIL and Formula Kite. The competition transformed Vilamoura into a global hub for youth sailing.
According to Nuno Reis, CEO of Vilamoura Sailing, the goal for 2026 is to expand the event even further, with a target of 80 participating nations. He also highlighted the strong economic impact generated by the championship, benefiting local accommodation, restaurants, and tourism-related services.
Portuguese sailors also delivered notable performances in 2025. Madalena Wanzeller finished 13th in the ILCA 6 class among 49 competitors, while Diogo Borges de Sousa secured 15th place in iQFOIL, overcoming a recent injury and gaining valuable international experience.
The event received strong institutional support from the Vilamoura Marina, Loulé City Council, Turismo de Portugal, and the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth (IPDJ).
With the Youth Sailing World Championship returning in 2026, Vilamoura continues to position itself as a premier destination for major international sporting events, combining world-class facilities with exceptional sailing conditions.
